When I was little, I wanted desperately to have my own horse. As a kid in the city, the closest I ever got were Breyer models. The appaloosa mare and mustang stallion were the start of my own herd. Together we would race over the northern plains. The stories they told me were endless.</image:caption>

For a number of years, as I walked my sons to and from their daycare, I dedicated myself to drawing the natural objects that they would pick up along our walks: sticks, rocks, a bird’s nest, and this maple seed. My philosophy was that I would never have a shortage of things to make images with, and it kept me dedicated to carving out time, even small amounts of it, to make art while also caring for two young boys. I think of “Balance” and its depiction of the potential for growth as both a reflection on parenting and the potential of that life to grow beyond me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lindsay J. Twa, Minnesota Rising, HIPs engraving, 2026. Image 6” x 4”; paper: 10” x 8” on Hahnemühle Copperplate. Edition of 50, original hand-pulled prints available. This image came to me as the events in Minnesota of January 2026 unfolded. Although I have not lived there for over twenty years, Minnesota is my home and my identity is rooted in growing up there. The loon rises from the water, with a full moon and an Ojibwe star quilt becoming a rose window. Minnesota’s native American White Water-Lily, manoomin (wild rice), and the Showy Lady's Slipper frame the scene and form the cathedral’s structure. Deploying the symbols of honor, generosity, respect and a sense of being rooted in place, I celebrate the people of Minnesota who stand up to tyranny and make sure that there is a place at the table for all.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lindsay J. Twa, Where the Light Enters, woodcut, 2026 Image size: 49” x 31.5”. Archivally matted and framed: 58” x 40” My recent body of work is an engagement with the vagaries of time and human fumblings towards wisdom. Geologic time can have deeper answers and questions that put into perspective the minuteness of human time. My inspiration is drawn from the stark grandeur of the slot canyons of Navajo Nation. The sedimental formation of this landscape is the trace of thousands of years beyond my comprehension, and yet the accumulation of its lines invited the work of my hand as a printmaker—for what is an engraving or a woodcut but an accumulation of lines? Relief printmaking is an act of removing material, and accumulating shimmering layers of values or colors. But, by its nature, it is also an act of bringing light out of darkness. The long arrival of light that can only be experienced in the eternal yet fleeting now.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lindsay J. Twa, Daphne’s Story, HIPs engraving, 2022. image: 9x6”; paper: 14 x 11”, Somerset Satin. Edition of 50, original hand-pulled prints available. This work began as a meditation on the myth of Daphne who was pursued by the god Apollo. The original tale was certainly not told from Daphne’s perspective. What might it look like if it were told from the perspective of the trees? Surely Daphne was not alone, nor the only one. Did she find empathy and support? Did her story continue? I certainly hope so. The passing down of stories often fixes the narrative to one viewpoint. This is repeated not just in the telling but also in how it comes to be represented. If you look closely, you might notice that the figures are modeled after Bernini’s sculpture of this tale. The forest, in contrast, was inspired by the nineteenth landscape paintings of Asher B. Durand. A member of the Hudson River School, Durand worked during a period when the American wilderness came to the fore for landscape painting. I altered the trees to become Daphne’s support. Maybe we can reclaim a lost voice just as we might work to preserve our diminishing environment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lindsay J. Twa, Spring Renewal, engraving, 2022. image: 11” x 10” on Somerset Satin. edition of 20, original hand-pulled prints available. The idea for Spring Renewal came from the lucky discovery of a maple seed “helicopter” that had sprouted in a drain at my house. I was fascinated by the roots and stalk, with its first leaves, as they emerged from the seed head. As I began drawing it from life, I had two simultaneous thoughts. The first was about spring planting superstitions, and how it is auspicious to plant a seed during a full moon—such as told in the children’s story Strega Nona’s Harvest, which was a favorite with my kids when they were little. My second thought was how the future roots and branches would expand and interweave, and that led me to think about the ribbon interlace patterns of Celtic art. All of these ideas came together as I carved this engraving.</image:caption>

Archivally matted and framed, 38” x 30”. SOLD.

Twa, Little Plastic Horses, pencil and oil color pencil, 2022. archivally matted and framed, 38” x 30.” NFS What’s more real, the child or the horses? When I was little, I wanted desperately to have my own horse. As a kid in the city, the closest I ever got were Breyer models. The appaloosa mare and mustang stallion were the start of my own herd. Together we would race over the northern plains. The stories they told me were endless.</image:caption>
